Greetings

你好(ni hao)

A greeting said when meeting someone or coming across an acquaintance. The response is also 你好。

您好( nin hao )

A greeting to a higher position or an older person or a customer.

However, when Chinese people meet, various amenities and civilities are exchanged, for instance:"How are you? Long time no see. How are you doing lately?" "How is your work? How you been busy?" "Where are you going?" and etc instead of "你好" or “您好”.

The other party may give a truthful and factual answer or just a brief answer like "Passable",
"Quite well", "Not very busy" "I am out for something".

These questions indicate that the person asking you is concerned about you or interested in you. So please do not feel strange or upset since they are just amenities.

When coming across someone, the Chinese do not often say "How are you" or  "Good morning". They are used to asking questions about what you are doing or what you are about to do according to the time or situation.
